Brian's
Introduction
By
Brian Walsh (Founder & CEO of
Entrepreneur.co.za)
As much as we may like to try, we cannot really
separate our personal lives from our endeavors
as an entrepreneur. (This is discussed in more
detail in the guide Entrepreneurship – A Way
of Life.) I am married with three children,
and I have come across many challenges with
regards to how my wife and children relate to my
business, and my working so hard so much of the
time. I, of course, expect them to understand
because after all, I am bringing in the money
which affords them the lifestyle they live. In
reality though, this is not right. Family is an
essential part of achieving fulfillment and
success in life, and it is not fair to just
expect them to understand. Sometimes they just
want a husband or a dad, not an entrepreneur!
Too often I have seen families fall apart
because one or both parents have their own
businesses.
Stress is a big factor in the personal
challenges that entrepreneurship can involve –
this often relates to periods where you are not
doing so well. Often, we may take our
frustrations out on the children, which becomes
apparent in our behaviour towards them. We need
to make more effort. When things are tough, be
open and honest, even with young children. Love
is more important than money, especially to
them. The by-product of a struggling
entrepreneur is often stress and pre-occupation
which can easily be interpreted by your loved
ones as a lack of love.
Don’t sacrifice your relationships with your
spouse and children for your business. It is
something you may well live to regret. Let them
participate in your endeavours, and even help
make decisions. Never stop showing them love, no
matter how tough it gets.
