Brian's
Introduction
By
Brian Walsh (Founder & CEO of

I am not a master in the field of reviewing and
discipline, but what I do know is that there are
procedures that need to be followed. You can’t
discipline or fire staff without following these
procedures.
Truthfully, as an entrepreneur, you should
constantly work on improving your communication
skills. Using these skills, you can often avoid
the need for formal activities related to
misconduct by a staff member. When issues arise
they should be dealt with immediately.
Effective communication, particularly when it
involves understanding and encouragement, can
often resolve problems before they become
unmanageable.
We as entrepreneurs should treat our staff with
compassion. I would rather know of a personal
problem in one of my employees’ lives, than not
know, and not understand what might be affecting
his or her performance. In my opinion, there is
a fine line between personal and professional
relationships, but in the entrepreneurial world
we should put it out there that we will always
make time to listen and advise where possible,
regarding employees’ personal challenges. In
doing so, you can better manage the overall
performance of your staff.
I am also a great believer in reviewing staff
performance. This takes effort and again,
requires some dedication from your side. There
are many ways of reviewing staff performance and
we will look at some of these in more detail in
this sub-section. In the meantime, you should at
least create a simple review process which is
well-documented and involves managers and even
fellow employees in its assessment aspects.
Spend some time in this section to make sure you
empower yourself to effectively review staff
performances and ensure that there is a ‘happy
ship’ at all times in the workplace. This issue
can greatly affect productivity and your bottom
line. Take it seriously.
